The object of this enquiry is first to examine the terms surface, edge, and the gap between edges in theirphysical and conceptual manifestations; then to pursue this investagation in relation to a number of contemporary artists, but specifically in relation to the work of Anselm Kiefer. The intention ultimately is to ascertain whether there is a gap and to consider its possibilities; then, by reference to the artistic work previously examined, to demonstrate the opening of these possibilities.
